US election: Obama V Romney- who is winning the email race? (infographic)

October 22, 2012

Election Day is just weeks away and both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s campaigns are in full swing. The success of each of the candidates on November 6 relies on effectively communicating to their constituents, seeking to build support, donations and their voter bases. This infographic from Return Path looks at who is winning the email battle in the race to the White House.

Email still remains one of the most effective ways to reach people. For Obama and Romney, reaching the inbox has never been more important.
A received and read email means the candidate’s message was heard, potentially resulting in campaign donations and a vote at the polls.
A deleted or, worse, spammed email means a missed opportunity in reaching and influencing a potential voter.
Additionally, the multiple time zones in the US must also be taken into consideration to ensure they get their email campaigns right.
So which 2012 campaign is winning the email race?
Return Path, the global leader in email intelligence, has developed an infographic to compare the practices Romney and Obama are using to maneuver in the digital landscape, particularly in the email channel.
A few points to note:
• Gmail vs. Yahoo – Gmail users tend to favor Obama, and Yahoo! users lean Republican.
• Is Obama the “Spammer-in-Chief?” – Five percent of Obama’s emails in the inbox were marked as spam, compared to only 0.8% of Romney’s emails.
• FWD – With a slogan like “Forward,” you’d think Obama would have more people passing his emails along. However, nearly 6% of Romney’s emails were forwarding his emails, compared to only 0.04% of Obama’s.
