National Rail launches travel planner smart TV app

May 31, 2012

National Rail Enquiries (NRE) has launched a SmartTV app enabling passengers to plan their train journey from the comfort of their living room.

Working with TV App Agency, NRE is launching the app across multiple SmartTV platforms.
The app will enable visitors to search by route and time; it will also provide live departure and real time running information.
NRE handles an average of 2 million journey enquiries every day through their contact centres, website and mobile channels.
Jonathan Chong, Web Development Manager at NRE said: “Providing our customers with a SmartTV app is a natural progression from our smartphone app for iOS and Andriod launched earlier this month. We want to make it easy for passengers to find the information they need in the way that suits them best, whether it’s on the web, through their smartphone or a SmartTV.
At NRE we believe in exploring new technologies to ensure that we provide excellent service across any device, platform or channel.”
The National Rail Enquiries website offers journey planning, timetable and fare information and provides a range of rail-related information to passengers.
The TV app will allow rail users to quickly plan their journey and check arrival and departure times in between watching their favourite programme.
NRE has plans to further develop the app and is exploring the introduction of push notifications of train delays or changes to passengers’ journey – all to help make travelling by rail easier.
TV App Agency’s new technology, The Engine, provides allows developers to create TV apps for many different TV platforms from a single source of code.
Bruno Pereira, Director and co-founder of TV App Agency said, “I believe services will be the most used non-video apps of the future.”
