Tesco has axed its second-hand car sales website after just a year – because it did not have enough cars to list on the website.
The shutdown was announced on the Tescocars.com website with the words, “Following a review of the business model we and Carsite, our partner, have decided that we cannot offer customers a satisfactory range of vehicles and as a result, have decided it is right to close the business.”
Tescocars.com was launched in April last year after Tesco took a significant minority stake in online dealership Carsite, with the supermarket giant promising buyers a trustworthy alternative to used-car dealerships.
But a source for magazine Car Dealer stating that it was selling only ‘150 cars a month.’ Tesco blamed stock supply issues for the failure.
Tesco goes on to promise on the closed site that if it cannot meet outstanding orders for existing buyers, they would be offered refunds through its customer service centre.
It also added that warranties were not impacted by the closure as they are run by a separate company, The Warranty Group.
