UK’s top baby names soar in value online

April 26, 2011

Boys are outstripping girls in the domain name stakes, with many parents snapping up web addresses of their children before they become valuable, according to new data.

Sedo, the global domain name market place, today announces findings that reveal the value of domains featuring the UK’s top boy and girl names.
The figures show that the average value for the top .co.uk boys and girls domain names is £10,200.

Sedo’s research shows that .co.uk web addresses for boys out-price those of girls, valued at £112,000 and £92,000 respectively. Ruby.co.uk was found to be the most valuable girl’s domain name, with the highest minimum valuation of £20,000, while the domain names Thomas.co.uk, Jack.co.uk and Harry.co.uk are the three highest-valued, popular boy domain names, worth £15,000 each. Sedo conducted the research to show the value of buying online property as an investment model.
Nora Nanayakkara, Business Development Director at Sedo comments: “Identifying growing areas of value before they become popular in the mainstream is a popular investment strategy in shares trading and angel investments. The same can often be true of domain name investing in keyword, generic names or popular personal names.
Nanayakkara continued, “Spotting and purchasing a potentially lucrative domain name before it becomes globally recognised is a great way to make money. These domain names often hold or develop positive value, because they garner excellent search rankings and are commonly typed directly into the navigation bar of a browser. While premium domain names can carry hefty price tags, the majority of domain names are much more affordable, with an average investment price for a .co.uk domain just £1,291.”
