Yellow Pages creates £5,000 online video challenge

August 23, 2010

Yell is throwing down a £5,000 challenge in the hunt for the best amateur videos of “amazing things” that can be done with its Yellow Pages.directories.

The contest is being run to mark the directory’s revamp into a new handy-sized format that will fit through letterboxes.
It is the most significant change to the UK Yellow Pages directory since it was first published more than 40 years ago.
Last month, the new compact directories started to drop through letterboxes and to kick-start the nation’s creativity, Yell has set the benchmark with two memorable clips showing the much-loved and trusted Yellow Pages in slightly unusual settings.
In “Letterbox” – the hero of the clip manages to fling a new sized Yellow Pages directory straight through a letterbox from the road outside, to the admiration of his assembled mates.
“Breakdance” – launched this week – features high profile breakdancers honouring the Yellow Pages directory by weaving it into their incredible routines, showing just how versatile the new look directory really is. The clip ends with world record holder women’s kick boxer Chloe Bruce, who after a phenomenal display of leg work, then lobs the Yellow Pages from her foot high into the air and into a breakdancer’s shoulder bag.
Now it’s over to the nation’s amateur video makers to show Yell what “amazing things” they can do with their Yellow Pages. To enter, just upload your video to the YouTube or Facebook pages by 12th November 2010. A panel will judge the films on their innovation and creative use of the Yellow Pages, the number of views they get and the online feedback received. The best video will win £5,000 cash.
Phil Johnson, head of printed product management at Yell, said: ” We wanted to mark the launch of the new handy sized Yellow Pages in an exciting way and this competition is already proving popular. Born in 1966, the much-loved directory has embraced the constantly changing media landscape and the new size and design makes it even easier to search for local businesses and relevant information in your area.”
