Right to reply: Time shifted TV on the rise- but big screens are still king

February 21, 2013

New research this week from Thinkbox suggests that on-demand viewing drove up TV viewing to 4 hours per day in 2012. Jerome Rota, SVP of Consumer Products and Services at Twonky looks at changing TV habits, and why people still prefer to watch content on their TVs rather than tablets or PCs.

Key points from the Thinkbox report:
• In total, the average UK viewer watched 4 hours, 4 minutes of TV a day in 2012
• Viewers are watching 27 minutes more linear TV a day than ten years ago
• 51% of UK households now own a DTR (digital TV recorder) compared to 50% in 2011
.
• The release discusses the record number of television programmes being watched outside their scheduled broadcast time and on a variety of devices, according to industry research. It addresses the changing viewing habits we are witnessing, as the growing on-demand services increase in popularity and provide businesses with new revenue opportunities.
Jerome Rota, SVP of Consumer Products and Services at Twonky commented:
“The fact that consumers are watching more TV online, using on-demand services and accessing content on tablets and smartphones is a clear sign that the connected home is already here, where all of our media content can be accessed across each of our devices.
“The way we watch TV has changed significantly; it involves more screens and the internet is now a core component to TV viewing. However, today’s findings still support the idea that the TV remains at the centre of the living room.
This supports our own recent research findings that showed 51% of people still prefer to watch catch up TV on the big screen. Although mobiles and tablets are becoming a core part of the TV experience, they are predominantly devices for discovering content, acting more like a new remote control than a platform to view video on.
“The best screen in the house is still undoubtedly the television; only when different media devices are connected in one network can consumers truly take advantage of all of their devices.”
