Olympic opening ceremony breaks iPlayer records

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games has set the record for the most number of views in a single day on the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up platform.

Originally aired on Friday night, the Danny Boyle-directed ceremony was requested on the iPlayer 925,000 times on Saturday, the BBC said. Over the course of the weekend, it was requested a total of 1.7 million times.
The standout moment of the ceremony- James Bond sky-diving with the Queen- also notched up 640,000 views on YouTube.
Sunday was the busiest ever day on the BBC Sport site, with 6.1 million unique UK visitors and 8.3 million worldwide. The BBC’s dedicated Olympics app has been downloaded more than 1.15 million times.
“Now people are back at work the graphs are going skywards with hundreds of thousands of people sneaking a look at our coverage in the office,” said Cate O’Riordan, head of product for BBC Sport.
The UK public broadcaster is delivering up to 24 simultaneous live video streams of Olympic coverage.
The BBC’s official Olympics app has been a success, hitting 1.15 million downloads.
