Facebook to ramp up facial recognition with Face.com acquisition?

May 30, 2012

Facebook is considering another post-IPO acquisition, this time expanding its facial recognition technology through the acquisition of Tel Aviv-based based Face.com, according to new reports.

face.com
Israeli business publication Calcalist reports that the social networking giant is close to purchasing face recognition technology company Face.com. Meanwhile, Newsgeek reports that the deal size is between $80 million and $100 million.
Face.com describes itself as “the world’s largest and most accurate face recognition platform”.
It offers apps that scan photographs on Facebook, Twitter, and other popular sites, and offers to tag them with detected faces. Face.com also offers an API that lets developers use Face.com’s face detection technology in their own applications.
Face.com has raised $5.3 million in funding from Yandex and Rhodium to date.
Face.com’s Facebook app Photo Tagger gets just 3000 Monthly Active Users (MAU) reported by AppData.
The lack of popularity of its apps suggests any potential acquisition by Facebook would just be for the domain name, but do not discount Face.com’s underlying technology.
