Social media world cup: France most talked about team

July 5, 2018

Following an incredible and unpredictable knockout stage, Socialbakers’ 2018 Social Media World Cup now shows that France are the most talked about side of the quarter finalists.

After England’s heroics this week, they come in second with over 2 million interactions across Twitter and Facebook, growing by over 500,000 since the group stage ended. With both teams potentially on course for the final can England usurp France after the quarters?

Quarter finalist teams: 14th June-3rd July:

In terms of players, Neymar’s standout performance in the round of 16 has earnt him his place at the top of the player’s Social Media World Cup table, narrowly beating Ronaldo across both platforms but falling short still on Facebook, where Ronaldo remains King. Neymar’s heroics have led to 2.5 million more impressions over the last four days. Messi, another giant of the game who has now bowed out of the competition, rounds out the top three.

But are we seeing a changing of the guard, with rising stars such as Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Rashford all in the top ten? The long reigning Kings of the game may have been toppled, but can the young guns take advantage and remain in the spotlight on the biggest stage of them all? Please see the full player tables below:
