Siri rival? Amazon buys voice recognition firm Yap ahead of Kindle tablet launch

November 11, 2011

Amazon looks set to include its own version of iPhone’s Siri voice recognition in its forthcoming Kindle Fire tablet, buying voice recognition startup Yap.

The deal has not been confirmed, but a US Securities and Exchange commission filing found by CLT Blog revealed Yap was purchased by a company called Dion Acquisition Sub.
The address for the new merged business, however, is a Seattle building belonging to Amazon.
Amazon has refused to comment on the news, but Allthingsd reports that it confirmed the acquisition independently. Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
Yap shut down its public transcription service for email at the end of last month, fuelling speculation it had been acquired by Amazon.
Analysts believe the new software will be integrated into Amazon products to allow the Kindle Fire to compete with the iPad.
The iPhone 4S launched last month comes with a voice recognition personal assistant known as Siri, with many expecting it to be integrated in all future Apple phones and tablets.
Amazon will launch the Kindle Fire in the US on 15 November. A UK launch date has yet to be announced.
