SEMrush has carried out a study to shed light on some of the latest Halloween trends in the UK. Which costumes are the most popular? What regions in the UK are most engaged with Halloween?
For the third consecutive year, the study found that 2017’s most searched for Halloween costume is comic book villain Harley Quinn, who has become a firm fan favourite since the release of the film Suicide Squad. Wonder Woman and clown costumes come in a close second and third respectively.
Wonder Woman was a new entry for 2017’s list, in at second place. It’s Wonder Woman’s first appearance in the top ten list as Halloween lovers look to emulate the star of the recent Warner Bros blockbuster.
Third place goes to ‘clown costumes’, with this year’s critically acclaimed remake of Stephen King’s “It”, almost certainly the inspiration behind what is sure to be an unsettling trend for those suffering from coulrophobia (a fear of clowns).
Seven out of the top ten costumes this 2017 come from popular films, primarily Warner Bros DC universe films. These include: Moana, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
Despite Halloween’s reputation as a celebration of horror, 50 percent of the top costumes involve dressing as ‘heroes’ (like Moana or Catwoman) with ‘villain’ costumes being pushed far down the list.
Halloween is an increasingly popular US import with Brits relishing the chance to dress up as their favourite characters. Unsurprisingly SEMRush found that London and Greater London see the most interest in Halloween costumes, closely followed by Bristol and the West
Midlands.
