Google launches $79 Daydream VR headset

November 11, 2016

Google has launched a new VR headset in the US, as the Internet giant looks to take on the like of Facebook’s Oculus Rift and Samsung’s Gear VR in the next-gen media sector.

The headset and controller, priced together at $79, are currently only compatible with Google’s new phones Pixel and Pixel XL, with a few other devices set to join Google’s phone soon.

The move follows Google’s previous VR efforts with its low budget Cardboard app and DIY devices, but Daydream marks a slicker new phase in the firm’s strategy.

Google has released an updated version of Google VR Services for Android. This is basically a framework that’s used to allow Daydream apps to work on Android phones, although it also includes features for Google Cardboard.

The latest version of Google VR Services includes support for pairing a Daydream headset and controller with a Daydream-capable smartphone, and support for displaying notifications when you’re in VR mode.
