Global university rankings: Which is best for business?

Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are still the charge for Business, but UK and France and challenging the top US institutions, according to new data.

The sixth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released today on TopUniversities.com, features a record-breaking 42 disciplines, making it the largest-ever ranking of its kind. Harvard has been ranked as the world’s best university for the study of Business & Management, in a year of US dominance.

The expert opinion of 8,376 academics and 13,244 employers informed the results for this year’s Business & Management rankings, alongside the analysis of 392,750 research papers.

This contributed to the assessment of 2,630 institutions that offer a Business & Management course. 957 of these were ranked, with 200 chosen for the published rankings.

Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continue to take the lion’s share of top places, leading in 24 subjects between them. Each takes twelve leading positions. In second place for Business & Management is London Business School, last year’s leader. Completing the top three is INSEAD from France.

This year’s Business & Management ranking features the world’s top 200 places to study Business & Management. The most-featured country in the ranking is the United States, which takes 9 top-20 places, and 43 places overall. Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania – home to The Wharton School – are also in the top five. However, Italy’s Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (10th) remains in the top 10.

The United States’ success is also epitomised by Yale, which leaps from joint 26th to 16th this year, but there are also successes for the United Kingdom in Business & Management. The University of Cambridge (7th) rises from 13th into the top 10, while Oxford and LSE can also be found at 8th and 9th.

The best Asian university for Business & Management Studies is the National University of Singapore, which ranks 12th this year. Ten Latin American universities feature in the top 200 for Business Studies. Two of these are in the top 100: Chile’s Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM).

Ben Sowter, Head of the QS Intelligence Unit, said: “Though the US and UK remain dominant, our most inclusive rankings ever show that excellence can be found in an ever-increasing number of places. Nations like Austria, South Africa, Finland, Brazil, China, and Sweden can be found in the top ten of our tables. Our new top 200 for Business & Management acknowledges academic excellence in 33 different countries, with institutions from 8 different countries in the top 20.”
