Top 50 UK retailers: NotOnTheHighStreet biggest Christmas surprise

January 8, 2015

The latest IMRG Top 50 Retailer Ranking, in partnership with comScore, reveals there were a number of online retailers climbing the ranks during November 2014. Ticketmaster UK and Screwfix were both up 8 places compared with the same month last year, while Very and House of Fraser rose 6 places. However, the biggest riser this time was Notonthehighstreet.com, which soared 21 places to 27th place.

Key findings:
• Amazon and Argos remain the top 2 retailers on the list this quarter, with Tesco overtaking Apple to claim third place.
• The five fastest movers this quarter were Notonthehighstreet.com (up 21 places), Ticketmaster UK and Screwfix (+8), Very and House of Fraser (+6).
• Eight of the top 10 retailers are Multichannel, with almost 70% of the top 50 having a physical store presence.
Tesco overtook Apple to take third place and AVG was a new entrant in the top 10, rising 5 places to 9th position. Multichannel brands also appear strong in November with 8 of the top 10 retailers on the list having a physical store presence in the latest ranking.
Sainsbury’s fell 8 places from November 2013 to 23rd place this time, with other notable declines being Matalan and Littlewoods, both down 6 places, while Debenhams fell 5 places to 13th place in the latest rankings.
Tina Spooner, Chief Information Officer at IMRG said: “The strength of Multichannel retailing is evident with 8 of the top 10 retailers and almost 70% of the top 50 having a physical store presence in the latest Retailer Ranking. This is corroborated in the performance of the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, which reveals that year-to-date High St / Multichannel retailers are ahead in terms of e-retail growth compared with their Online-only counterparts.”
Mike Read, Managing Director of comScore UK commented: “With Black Friday continuing to grow in popularity in the UK, November has gained increasing importance for retailers as they seek to entice customers with attractive deals in the lead up to the Christmas shopping period.
“Online and multi-channel retailers that best leverage this November momentum should be well positioned to see strong Christmas seasons.”
Jason Weston, Chief Operating Officer, Notonthehighstreet.com said: “We are really pleased to see Notonthehighstreet.com achieve the biggest year-on-year rise in the IMRG Top 50 Retailer Rankings. It reinforces what we are seeing, that more and more customers are coming to us to find the less ordinary products that only our community of the UK’s best small creative businesses can supply.”The rankings are based on website visitors. Only transactional websites were included, so price comparison websites have been excluded from the list.”
