Myspace is trying to win back some of the 300 million users it once boasted… by reminding them of their Myspace days with some cringe-worthy old selfies from the last decade.
The novel new marketing strategy is an attempt to reverse steady membership decline and numerous failed re-launches under various new managers.
The emails, which each include several photos dating back to as far as 2005, read, “The good, the rad and the what were you thinking…” along with a link to that user’s old Myspace profile.
Between 2005 and 2008, Myspace was the most visited social networking website in the world and, while it was eventually surpassed by Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and even Google Plus, the website still holds a special spot in the hearts of many who remember carefully selecting their “Top 8” friends and taking bathroom selfies for profile pics.
Back in 2011 Justin Timberlake and Specific Media bought Myspace from News Corp for $35 million and gave it a new look as a big time site for bands to post new music and interact with fans.
Myspace still has 15 billion photos of users in its database, compared to Facebook which has more than 250 billion user photos.
