Google eyes Dropcam home security cams

May 28, 2014

Google is mulling a bid for home security system DropCam as the internet giant continues to expand into the much vaunted ‘Internet of Things’, according to a news report.

The Information reports that Google has “considered” a bid for Dropcam, but it isn’t clear if there have been any talks between Google and the company or what the status of those talks may be.
Dropcam makes connected home security video cameras, with two-way audio functions, remote monitoring, and cloud-based subscription video recording and storage capabilities.
The startup has raised almost $50 million in its five-year history, and its camera hardware is a popular seller at Amazon, the Apple Store and more.
The purchase would tie-in with Google’s Nest division, which currently features smartphone controlled thermostats and smoke detectors.
The report comes as rival Apple is rumoured to be unveileing a smart home software platform that lets lighting controllers, security systems and other hardware be controlled by iPhones, according to a report in the Financial Times.
