The rise of console-free gaming: OnLive ditches rentals for Steam synced gaming

March 7, 2014

OnLive, the service that allowed users to buy and stream videogames via the cloud, has relaunched with a new business model.

The new service no longer lets users buy or rent streamable games through OnLive, instead letting users play games they already own on any device with a browser.
The new ‘Cloudlift’ companion service allows lets save games to be stored in the cloud to ensure players can continue from where they left off.
For this, OnLive charges a £9.99 a month subscription. There is no contract so players can cancel at any time.

At launch CloudLift works with Steam and the games in your Steam library OnLive has done deals with.
OnLive has signed up titles from Warner Bros. and Deep Silver, with more deals waiting in the wings. Compatible games at launch include Batman: Arkham Origins, The Lego Movie Videogame, Saints Row 4 and indie game Type: Rider. Support for Europa Universalis 4 and F1 2013 is in the works.
Console-free cloud gaming has grown in popularity in recent years, with many in the industry predicting it will go mainstream in the future. Sony recently launched Playstation Now, letting users play console-quality games via a web connection- without the need for an actual console.
