Yahoo buys gaming platform PlayerScale

May 24, 2013

Yahoo has bought gaming platform startup PlayerScale, for an undisclosed sum, as the firm continues to boost its online content business.

Founded in 2011, PlayerScale, provides backend services to thousands of game developers whose products are played by more than 150 million people worldwide.
Unlike many of the other companies that Yahoo has acquired in recent months, PlayerScale will not be shutting down its services.
“With Yahoo!’s backing, we can crank out awesome products and improvements to our platform faster than ever before,” Jesper Jensen, PlayerScale’s CEP, wrote in a post on the company’s website. “We will continue to support our existing product and deliver new services to help you grow and manage your success in cross-platform gaming — whether it’s casual, social or mobile.”
Yahoo plans to use PlayerScale’s infrastructure technology to support its own products.
“The team has built an incredible gaming platform that is used by over 150 million players worldwide,” Yahoo said in a statement provided to Mashable. “We intend to continue to support and grow PlayerScale’s technology, and we look forward to building great new experiences on Yahoo! using the PlayerScale platform.”
The acquisition comes just days after Yahoo acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion, and it marks Yahoo’s 12th acquisition since Mayer took over as CEO.
