February 22, 2013

Social network for kids BinWeevils has inked a deal with Sony to launch a new album, as it looks to emulate the success of Moshi Monsters and Club Penguin.

The partnership will see the release of ‘Bin Tunes’ on 1st April 2013, a debut music album featuring popular characters from the BAFTA award-winning platform. It will be available to pre-order from Amazon and other retailers.
The signing reflects Bin Weevils’ success with kids 6 to 12 – the digital social world now receives over two million unique visitors every month, equating to 50% of all children in the UK.
BinWeevils.com recently announced that 20 million kids have registered on the platform since launch.
BinWeevils.com has offered its fanbase of 20 million registered users the opportunity to pen the lyrics of four tracks on the album. As well as earning a song-writing credit, four winners get to spend a day at a London studio with a top music producer. Over 35,000 lyrics were submitted, generating anticipation and excitement about the album release.
Bin Tunes’ celebrates the ethos of the digital social platform, where much of the creativity is driven by kids themselves. It includes tracks written by kids, sung by kids and has an album cover voted for by kids, giving them ownership of an album they have helped create. Eight kids have been chosen to sing on the album, from the many who auditioned.
Amelia Johnson, co-founder, BinWeevils.com says: “We’re thrilled to collaborate with music giant Sony Music to create an album which reflects the spirit of BinWeevils.com, by inviting kids to contribute so substantially to its content. We wanted this to be an album by kids for kids, so it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to empower them with a say in so many aspects. The album lyrics competition in particular has generated huge anticipation, and the standard of entry was so incredibly high. Kids know their peers have written lyrics about some of their favourite characters, and there is a tremendous sense of pride that they’ve been given such a significant voice.”
Phil Savill, Director of Sony CMG Marketing adds “Amelia and her team have done a remarkable job over the last three years building BinWeevils.com into the market-leading children’s website. I am delighted to be working in partnership with them on ‘Bin Tunes’, the first ever BinWeevils.com album. We have engaged with BinWeevils.com fans right from the start of the project by inviting them to join a competition to write their own lyrics for the album. We have received an astonishing number of entries to the competition, proving both that music plays a very important part in the lives of the young and that they are clearly fanatical about BinWeevils.com. I’m looking forward to seeing Tink, Clott and the rest of the BinWeevils.com crew at the Top of the Charts in April.”
