Domino’s online sales outstrip phone orders for first time

September 27, 2012

Online orders for pizzas beat phone purchases at Domino’s for the first time this month, as more than half of deliveries were bought via its website or apps.

Driven by smartphone use, the business – whose 770 outlets are primarily run through franchisees – said internet sales accounted for 58 per cent of UK deliveries, up from 46.5 per cent last year.
Domino’s has an app to make ordering from mobile phones much easier, and smartphone sales accounted for 18.5 per cent of the £62.8m of online business in the quarter.
Despite total sales up 7.9% in the period Domino’s shares dropped 30p to 533p, a 5% decline.
The company, however, remains confident. It said there were some planning challenges in the UK but it was still on track for 60 new stores there by the year end.
Chief executive Lance Batchelor said the company approached its traditionally strongest trading period with ‘continued optimism and determination’.
