16% of UK adults ‘have never used the internet’- ONS

August 17, 2012

Nearly 1 in 5 (16%) UK adults have never used the internet, amounting to 7.82 million people, according to new research.

The ONS statistics for the second quarter of 2012 show a 10% decline in the number of adults who have not used the internet.
The data showed that just 28.6 per cent of people over 75-years-old had used the internet, suggesting it is older people who are less likely to have gone online.
By contrast, almost all 16 to 24 year olds (99%) have used the internet.
A total of 87% of men have used the internet compared to 82% of women.
The research revealed that disabled people are three times more likely never to have used the internet than people without a disability.
London and south-east England have the highest rate of internet use with 88% of adults, while Northern Ireland had the lowest proportion of internet users, at 77%.
This news comes as Ofcom revealed that average internet speeds in the UK have increased as Brits are turning to super-fast broadband.
It revealed that the average internet speeds in the country are 9Mbps compared to 6.8Mbps in May last year.
