According to the latest analysis from Experian, using its online competitive intelligence tool, Experian Hitwise, UK internet searches for the word ‘England’ have seen a 67 per cent increase on the night of the countries 1-0 victory which saw the team secure their place in the quarter finals against Italy.
Searches for results, highlights and kick off times also saw a steady increase in the last week.
Support for the England team on the ground is also set for a boost as supporters look into joining the team for the final stages of the tournament.
Flight searches for Poland and Ukraine are up by 51 per cent, with Ryanair in particular benefiting from increased flight searches to Poland in the last two days.
Fans choosing to stay at home to watch the games have been looking to upgrade their TV’s, with tournament sponsor Sharp seeing a boost in TV searches of 57 per cent. Yesterday also saw the biggest spike this month in visits to online alcohol vendors, with visits set to continue to rise ahead of the weekend and the quarter final matches.
James Murray, Digital Insight Manager for Experian Marketing Services, commented: “You can judge the mood of the footballing nation just by looking online for signs of optimism. It’s clear from our analysis that the win against Ukraine has seen a flurry of feel-good activity online, with fans’ optimism reflected in the searches they’re making – from tickets to Poland, to offers on new flatscreen TVs. If England do well, we’re predicting a huge surge in online activity that could only be upstaged by Team GB’s performance at London 2012. Smart digital marketers will know precisely how to tap into the mood of the nation with the right offer at the right time.”
