Just one day after Google launched it’s take on the cloud storage space, another key player has entered the arena. Sony’s PlayMemories cloud storage service has launched in the UK, but unlike its rivals DropBox and Google Drive, the service only works for media files.
The service is available online or via a downloadable mobile app for free on both the Android and iOS platforms.
Unlike Dropbox and Google Drive, Sony Playmemories Online offers 5GB of free cloud storage solely for storing media files including photos and HD videos, rather than emails and documents.
One stored, users can access the files “at any time, on any device”, be it a PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Playstation 3 console.
Photos or videos can be backed up by uploading them to PlayMemories via PC or Mac.
To retrieve clips and snaps, users need to log in via an internet connection before being able to view them on your computer, Sony PlayStation 3, smartphone or tablet.
Sony is also said to be working on making the service compatible with Bravia TVs and S-Frame digital photo frames, though this update won’t be available until the summer.
Sony is offering 5GB of free storage which is the same volume as Google Drive, but less than Microsoft’s SkyDrive which offers 7GB free.
Rival Samsung is rumoured to be launching its own cloud storage service alongside the Samsung Galaxy S III in London next week.
