Brits ‘jet off with 18.6 million kilos of holiday reading’

July 18, 2011

As Brits fly off to sunnier destinations for rest and relaxation, they take a staggering 18.6 million kilos of books with them- with an increasing number switching to e-readers to tackle their holiday weight problem.

One in seven (15%) travellers take at least five books away while 40% bring up to three books each, according to shopping comparison site PriceRunner.co.uk.
With this in mind, and with airlines getting stricter about weight allowance and excess charges, some Brits are turning to e-readers, Kindles and iPads – lightweight electronic devices that can store thousands of books – to get their literature fix on the beach.
With 16% of the population already owning one of these gadgets and using them on holiday, PriceRunner.co.uk has spotted a 35% increase in the number of searches for e-Readers and Kindles and a 105% increase in the number of searches for iPads over the last three months.
Alison Guise, MD of PriceRunner.co.uk, comments: ‘These gadgets are a much easier, lighter and more convenient way to read your favourite books on holiday. With several excellent deals on the market right now and with summer holidays already upon us, it has never been a better time to treat yourself and join the growing community of e-book fans.’
