ScanMe turns social media profiles into real world barcodes

May 20, 2011

Social media tool ScanMe has launched this week, an application that creates a unique, permanent, QR barcode for a user through their Facebook account.

This barcode can then be displayed anywhere, in the real world as well as the virtual world, to create connections with the people they meet.
A ScanMe barcode can link to any social media profile, website or email address; with the ability to change the information that is displayed with just a few clicks on the control panel from a Smart phone.
ScanMe also incorporates an individuals’ QR barcode into clothing items, in a range they are dubbing “Interactive Fashion”. With a number of artists on board, such as the Ray Ban and Wired magazine designer Matt W.Moore, the ScanMe t-shirt range is bringing QR Codes to a whole new audience.
John Harrison, Founder and Director of ScanMe, said: “ScanMe gives its users a way to connect their social online world with the world they walk around in everyday. Just by wearing a t-shirt, and choosing what people see when their barcode is scanned, people open up a whole new world of interaction and connection with those around them.”
John Harrison is a serial internet entrepreneur. In 2004, he built and sold an online social education website to Microsoft. John then went into partnership with the co-founders of ASOS.com to create an on-demand ecommerce business which was acquired by OTTO, the world’s 2nd largest e-tailer in 2009. As well as running ScanMe, John is also developing an on-demand clothing portal for Tesco, the world’s 3rd largest retailer.
