Time Out launches iPhone and iPod Touch apps for tourists

November 30, 2010

TigerSpike has designed, built and powered a range of Time Out Travel Guide apps for tourists across the globe.

The new apps, available for iPhone and iPod Touch users, provide visitors with the local know-how of what to do and see whilst on holiday.
Location-based technology offers the most relevant information to users, through a range of features from maps and photos to an itinerary planner and personalised search functions.
The self-contained, interactive apps for Barcelona, Berlin and Buenos Aires are available for download now, and will be followed by apps for London and Paris to be launched by the end of the year.
Each app is less than 20MB in size, meaning they are small enough to download over a 3G network rather than requiring access to a Wi-Fi connection.
Once downloaded, travellers won’t run the risk of generating hefty data costs from international roaming as the apps don’t need to be accessed via a 3G or Wi-Fi network.
A key feature in each of the Travel Guide apps is the advanced itinerary planner allowing travellers to create daily schedules and arrange bookmarked venues by area, or distance from their current location.
“The opportunity for us was to provide our readers with a range of apps that were localised for each city. With Time Out’s extensive knowledge of 50 cities and 24 countries, knowing what content will work for each application and what information is best suited to the iPhone and iPod Touch was a real strength that TigerSpike brought to the table in establishing the first launch phase.” said David Pepper, managing director of the Time Out Digital.
The range of apps build on the success that Time Out and TigerSpike had with the Time Out London iPhone app, launched at the end of 2009, sponsored by Smirnoff.
“The iPhone and iPod Touch are the perfect channels for Time Out to communicate with tourists on the move, providing the flexibility for users to hunt down new places of interest and read reviews as they discover a new city,” said Nic Newman, Managing Director of TigerSpike. “Tourists visiting these five cities can be assured that relevant, targeted information is at their fingertips in an intuitive format that does not rely on connection to the internet.”
All of the apps have been created using content from the Time Out Cities editorial team and can be easily downloaded from the App Store for £2.99.
