Eureka! The Times debuts 59p science mag iPad app

November 5, 2010

Media firm TigerSpike, has worked with The Times to develop the new iPad app for the newspaper’s monthly science magazine, Eureka.

Designed as a special interactive edition of the magazine the app features video, audio, interactive elements, psychometric tests and rich content based on the science of sport.
Content has been specifically commissioned for the app, written by the same journalists who contribute to the print issue.
The app, available for download from the App Store for 59p has been designed as a digital version of a coffee-table book, to be accessed time and time again.
The Eureka app is totally self-contained and, once downloaded, does not require users to connect to their 3G or WiFi network to access any of the features.
“We’re incredibly proud of the Eureka app. When we were in the design process we didn’t want to create a purely functional app. Instead, what we wanted was an app that would wow, amaze and excite people, capturing the essence of Eureka in digital format,” said Robert de Souza, digital project manager, The Times
Powered by TigerSpike’s iPad Publishing Platform, Eureka is another application TigerSpike has designed for News Corp , having launched the first ever iPad application for The Australian in August 2010. The app went on to win the PANPA 2010 Digital Innovation Award.
“This is the first iPad app on the market that has fully exploited the richness and functionality of the device. It’s not simply a case of moving content from print to online to mobile. People use the iPad in an entirely different way to their phone or laptop,” said Nic Newman, Managing Director of TigerSpike. “We wanted to create something that people would come back to time and time again offering a fantastic user experience involving as many of the senses as possible.”
