Social football buzz: Ronaldo Juventus move generates more online interest than top 5 UK transfers

The Premier League transfer window closed early on the 9th August, with other European windows set to close on the 31st, but which players have sparked the most interest with the football-mad British public?

Cristiano Ronaldo, who transferred to Italian club Juventus after nine seasons at Real Madrid, has generated more online page views than the top five Premier League transfers combined, retaining his position as the most read about player in the world.

Taboola, a content discovery platform, analysed over 200 million page views across the UK on content relating to the players most read about during the transfer window.

The most popular Premier League transfer was Thibaut Courtois – who moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid in a £38m deal. Courtois generated 7% of all page views followed by Naby Keita with 6%, who was bought by Liverpool for £48m from RB Leipzig. Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez, Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri and Everton’s Yerry Mina, make up the top five read about transfers, with 4% of page views each.

Overall, the top 10 UK transfers accounted for 35% of UK transfer page views in total.
