October 25, 2011

The world’s biggest internet TV and film streaming service, Netflix is to launch in the UK early next year.

The news comes days after Google announced a movie rental service for UK Android users, and Sony announced the launch of its Entertainment Network, offering streaming and downloading services.
The US giant, which has 25million members worldwide, allows customers to stream films and shows online to TV’s and computers for a monthly subscription.
The Californian firm, which offers its services in the US, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, said it would unveil details of pricing, content and supported devices closer to the launch.
The service will also be available in Ireland.
Currently U.S. customers pay a minimum of $7.99 (£5) a month to watch unlimited movies and TV episodes on computers, tablets and phones as well as the TV.
The company also offers a postal DVD rental service, similar to the Amazon-owned LOVEFiLM model which operates in the UK.
Internet-streaming is becoming an increasingly competitive market, with companies including LOVEFiLM and Apple’s iTunes looking to capitalise on demand for movie and TV downloads.
Viewers can stream the Netflix service on their TVs through gaming devices including Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Nintendo’s Wii, Sony’s PS3 consoles, as well as some Blu-ray disc players and internet-connected TVs.
Brits can register their interest on Netflix’s site and will receive an email when the service is close to launch.
