Top 10 UK social media sites: Facebook extends lead over YouTube

October 14, 2011

Facebook increased its share of UK social network visits during September, accounting for over half of all traffic during the month, according to new research.

The data, released October 12 by digital market analysts Experian Hitwise, reveals the popularity of various social networking sites in terms of their market share of UK visitors to such sites.
The data shows that Facebook remained the top social networking site with a 51.94% share of visits to social networks by UK users in September, up 3.08% from August.
Though nearly all sites experienced a decline in visitor numbers, the data revealed that, despite being the UK’s fastest-growing social network for the past six months, YouTube experienced a 1.05 percent month-on-month drop in traffic, reducing its total market share to 22.50 percent.
Separate data from the US branch of Hitwise indicates that Facebook, Google and YouTube were also the top three most popular websites of any category in the US throughout the first week of October.
The top ten sites in terms of market share of visits by UK users to social networking sites in September, and the month-on-month increase, according to Experian Hitwise, are:
