BBC lets ‘citizen journalists’ submit news and pics via Android app

October 10, 2011

The BBC has updated its news app for Android devices, including a feature that lets citizens submit news, videos and photos via their phone for use in the broadcaster’s news coverage.

The move follows a similar app on the iPhone, as the broadcaster looks to encourage citizen journalists to contribute to its coverage as it faces 20% cutbacks.
The update to the app, which was launched in July, provides homescreen widgets that offer at-a-glance view of headlines, directly on the Android homescreen, improved personalisation, with the ability to add, remove and reorder news categories, and the ability to store the app on the SD card (though without the use of widgets).
Users can also use the app to send stories, video, and photos directly to the BBC News team.
The update will initially be available to users in the UK, with an update via the international Android Market to be made available at a later stage.
