Video viral of the week: Air New Zealand gets surreal with Katie Holmes in air safety video

July 14, 2017

Air New Zealand has become famous for its big budget safety videos that go viral on the internet, but it’s latest is its most ambitious yet. See why it’s our video viral of the week below…

The Alice In Wonderland-inspired film features Hollywood stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Katie Holmes.

But the centre of attention is New Zealand itself. Locations including the Southern Alps, the Conway River in Canterbury, Wellington, Cathedral Cove in the Coromandel, and the Auckland Harbour Bridge as the backdrop to aviation safety.

The four-minute film, titled “A Fantastical Journey” is set to a specially recorded version of My Little Corner Of The World by Gin Wigmore.

The celebrities open the film playing a pair of gods trying to name the earth’s various land masses — from Cuba to Samoa.

But when they happen upon “the most beautiful place” on the planet, they decide to take a closer look. That opens the door to a fantastical journey through New Zealand that weaves the typical fight safety tips into bizarre, visually stunning scenes.

Creative agency True and postproduction company Assembly were behind production of the spot.

Air New Zealand’s safety videos have collectively generated more than 108 million views online since the airline started doing things a little differently.

Previous videos have included Anna Faris and Rhys Darby while Elijah Wood featured in a Lord Of The Rings themed film.
