Top 10 Twitter hashtags of 2016: Olympics, Trump and Pokemon Go

December 8, 2016

Twitter has revealed the top 10 trending hashtags of 2016, showing that the Rio Olympics, Us Elections and Pokemon Go were the most Tweeted topics of the year.

To celebrate highlights throughout the year, Twitter is launching the #ThisHappened hashtag.

“What a year! From news and entertainment to sports and politics, around the world or around the block; it all happened on Twitter,” a statement from the microblog read.

The #ThisHappened hashtag is coupled with a custom Twitter 2016 emoji.

The social media platform has collected the top ten most used hashtags of the year to highlight the events and trends that defined 2016.

Unsurprisingly, the list for 2016 is dominated by political hashtags, but there’s also a smattering of big entertainment milestones in there. Take a look at the top ten hashtags of 2016 below.

1. #Rio2016

2. #Election2016

3. #PokemonGo

4. #Euro2016

5. #Oscars

6. #Brexit

7. #BlackLivesMatter

8. #Trump

9. #RIP

10. #GameofThrones

Twitter had a rough 2016 with job cuts and shares plummeting after buyouts by large suitors such as Google and Walt Disney faded.

This year the company also shut down Vine, the three-year-old app that rose to popularity for its six-second video clips, which they had acquired in 2012 before the app had even launched.
