Lad Bible app tops App Store just one day after launch

December 3, 2015

As iconic ‘lads mags’ FHM and Zoo close their doors for the last time, an online rival is going form strength to strength. Social news site The Lads Bible has topped Apple’s App Store just 24 hours after its launch.

Lad Bible, launched in 2012, uses a similar model to rival Buzzfeed, reaching 150 million people ollowing a similar trajectory.

The publication boasts a reach of 150 million, thanks in large part to Facebook, according to The Guardian.

The site’s content is a mix of the viral and more serious fare, from an update on what Anonymous is doing to fight ISIS to a compilation of viral photos.

The app reached the number one spot on 1st December 2015, ahead of much larger news publishers such as the BBC and the Guardian.

The app lets users download content, and offers offline caching, one-tap access, infinite scroll and personalisation.

To publication ran a marketing stunt to promote the app, working with Yorkshire-based Sentintospace who attached a camera onto a 10m diameter helium balloon, with a parachute attached, and filmed the results which are expected to appear on the site soon.

Solly Solomou, chief executive of the The Lad Bible, said: “We wanted to go the extra mile with our debut app launch and where better than space? The Russians sent a dog into space, Nasa sent a monkey to space. At The Lad Bible, we sent our app into space. Well, near space.”

To co-incide with the launch, The Lad Bible is urging users to send their funniest photos using the #TheLADbibleApp hashtag with the promise that the best would be retweeted.
