Facebook just 4th most popular social network for US teens- report

October 27, 2015

Facebook ranks only fourth as US teens’ most important social network, with Instagram the clear favourite, according to new research.

The Piper Jaffray semi-annual survey of American teens showed that in second place was Twitter with 20 percent, and following that was Snapchat with 19 percent.

Surprisingly, Facebook came in at fourth with just 15 percent of teens calling it the social network of choice.

This might not worry Facebook, as it has owned Instagram since 2012, but it should cause marketers to consider how much of their budget they are investing into Facebook when it comes to advertising to teens.

9,400 teens from households with an average income of $68,000 were polled, 56 percent of which were male.

The last survey was carried out in spring with the only significant change since then being Snapchat – which has leap-frogged Facebook this time round.

The results of this survey are backed up by a poll published by Forbes in January, which found that Facebook use actually declined in 2014.
