Facebook gets a billion users in just one day

September 1, 2015

One billion people have used Facebook in a single day, founder Mark Zuckerberg has said, in the latest milestone for the world’s largest social network.

Zuckerberg, who famously launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm, made the announcement in a post on his profile.

“We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.”

Mr Zuckerberg, who serves as CEO of Facebook, thanked users and said the milestone was “just the beginning of connecting the whole world”.

“A more open and connected world is a better world,” he added.

“It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values.”

Facebook said last month that second-quarter revenue had jumped from $2.91bn (£1.86bn) to $4.04bn (£2.59bn), beating analysts’ expectations, though quarterly profits fell by 9%.

The company has been investing heavily in mobile advertising, and the development of two recent acquisitions: the photo-sharing app Instagram and the WhatsApp messaging service.
Zuckerberg announced weeks ago that he and his wife are expecting a child.
