Home decor firm Hillary’s plans augmented reality board game carpets

October 12, 2017

An interiors specialist has created a series of concept images based on what carpets of the future could offer up in terms of children’s bedroom interiors and gaming décor. The Board Game Carpet is set to revolutionise the board games Britons have come to know and love.

Board Game Carpets, controlled by a smartphone app, will allow families to play together on a larger scale, as well as providing gamers around the world with a multiplayer option to connect with other board game carpet owners.

Interiors specialist Hillarys has created concept images showing what the Board Game Carpet might look like in the future. In a bid to bring families closer together, maximising family time, as well as giving gamers a new experience, the Board Game carpet will feature a base layer comprising a matrix of LED lights.

The Board Game Carpet will allow for classic and contemporary games to be played using the vast expanse of the floor as a playing area.

After downloading the corresponding app, parents, children and gamers will be able to choose from a catalogue of titles, with the LEDs illuminating the relevant board and pieces for the game, which shines through the normal top layer of carpet. With the app, users will also be able to adjust the size of the board game so as to avoid any furniture from interfering with the game. The smartphone can then be used as either a remote control for the game, or alternatively as a second screen for a range of more complex titles.

The initial roll out would include board game classics, such as Snakes & Ladders, Draughts and Chess. It’s hoped that third-party developers will see the opportunities offered by the large playing surface and its connectivity to a smartphone interface and go on to create custom games that really push the technology.

Tanya Irons, spokesperson for www.hillarys.co.uk, said: “Playing on a bigger scale promises gamers a chance to feel more involved in the action as it unfolds around them. Whether they’re playing with their family and friends, or they’re playing in a multiplayer functionality with gamers around the world, this brings new life to board games and will definitely get everyone involved. And the best bit; with LED boards, counters and dice, you’ll never need to worry about losing a crucial piece again.”
