iPhones get YouTube VR support for first time

May 19, 2016

The YouTube app on iPhones now supports Cardboard, Google’s own viewer headset that lets users experience virtual reality.

The release notes for the iOS app update say users can now enjoy Cardboard support and watch any video in VR mode.

The functionality was previously limited to the YouTube app on Android smartphones since November 2015.

By selecting the Cardboard mode on one of YouTube’s 360-degree videos, viewers get an immersive split-screen view.

Users can choose from a variety of 360 playlists from virtual city tours to films.

The mode also now works with other regular videos, reproducing the same content in each eye to make it appear like watching the video in a cinema-style viewing room.

The latest move to make VR more accessible to users comes ahead of this week’s I/O developer conference in Silicon Valley.

Google is expected to make another big VR announcement on a standalone headset which could bridge the gap between devices like the Oculus Rift and Cardboard.
