Facebook’s first temporary ‘Reaction’: Say it with flowers on Mother’s Day

May 9, 2016

It was Mother’s Day in over 80 countries on Sunday, and Facebook used the occasion to roll out its first temporary reaction- a flower to send to mums around the world.

Facebook rolled out a series of reactions last year, expanding form the rather ambigous ‘like’ setting it previously offered.

“In honour of Mothers’ Day, we are testing the ability for people in a few markets to leave a flower reaction,” Facebook said in a statement. The company did not specify which markets the flower was available to

After Mothers’ Day the flower will no longer be available to use, though it will not disappear from posts on which it has already been used.

Users in some countries have also been able to decorate their messages with flowers in advance of Mothers’ Day while using the Facebook messenger app.

The introduction of temparary reactions could signal more plans to expand the tool in the future- and opens the door to the posiblity of ‘sponsored reactions’ on Facebook.

The could be used in a similar vein to Twitter’s sponsored emojis, which have used by brands such as Coca-Cola.
