Jack Dorsey finally named as permanent Twitter CEO

October 6, 2015

Jack Dorsey has finally been named as the chief executive of Twitter replacing Dick Costolo who left the role in July.

Charged with growing the social network’s user base following a year or so of stagnation he’s dubbed “unacceptable”, Dorsey tweeted his plan of action following the announcement, and revealed that Adam Bain had been appointed chief operating officer.

Alongside his appointment, the company also promoted Adam Bain, formerly the company’s president of global revenue & partnerships, to a chief operating officer role.

Bain had been widely seen as the biggest competitor to Dorsey for the head position, but reportedly said he would only take it if Dorsey turned it down.

Dorsey will also remain CEO of Square, a mobile payments startup he also co-founded that is reportedly preparing for an IPO.

We are naming @adambain COO of Twitter, we're working to change the composition of our Board, and I will serve as CEO of Twitter and Square!

Whether he would hold the top job at both companies had been a matter of speculation.

Shortly after Twitter named Dorsey interim CEO, the board put out a statement that seemed to rule him out of the running, saying it only wanted candidates “in a position to make a full-time commitment to Twitter.”

But Dorsey tweeted on Monday that “I’ve been CEO of both companies for over 3 months now. I have the smartest, strongest, and most determined leaders in the world on my teams.”
