Bigger than Black Friday? Amazon creates Prime Day

July 7, 2015

Amazon is to run a huge day of sales on July 15 to celebrate its 20th birthday to rival the likes of Black Friday in the US and Singles Day in China.

The sales will be “filled with more deals than Black Friday”, according to the company. It will see discounted products across Amazon’s ranges, including electronics, toys and films.

New deals start at midnight July 15, with additional deals popping up every 10 minutes. Amazon has yet to offer any sneak peeks on what products will earn discounts during Prime Day.

Customers must be a member of Amazon Prime to get the deal. But the company is offering a 30-day free trial to promote the sales.

The deals will be available for customers in the UK, alongside those in the UK, Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Canada and Austria.

“Prime Day is a one-day only event filled with more deals than Black Friday, exclusively for Prime members around the globe. Members tell us every day how much they love Prime and we will keep making it better,” said Greg Greeley, Vice President Amazon Prime. “If you’re not already a Prime member, you’ll want to join so you don’t miss out on one of the biggest deals extravaganzas in the world.”

Amazon has been trying to promote its Prime service with a range of new features, including one-hour delivery in London.

The scheme charges £79 a year for quicker delivery and access to the companies streaming services — and some have complained that it is difficult to stop being a member.
