Twitter ‘planning music app’ after We Are Hunted purchase

April 15, 2013

A Twitter music app looks imminent, following the discovery of a mysterious music site and its acquisition of tune tracking service We Are Hunted.

Twitter has confirmed its purchase of We Are Hunted, a San Francisco-based music start-up that tracks the most popular songs across the internet.
The We Are Hunted brand will be retired and Twitter will launch the app using the acquired technology. A post at WeAreHunted.com explains that the website is being shut down and all user accounts will be deleted.
Discussing the new partnership, the statement said: “While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team. There’s no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on at Twitter.”
The app could be released on iOS by the end of March.
Meanwhile, a Twitter #music website has appeared online, fuelling rumours that the microblogging giant is about to launch a song discovery service.
The site contains only a logo and sign-in button at present, with user login requests failing to provide access to the application within.
Speculation surrounding a Twitter music service was apparently confirmed earlier this week when American Idol host Ryan Seacrest claimed to have been given a sneak preview of the app.
Twitter recently acquired music discovery tool We Are Hunted and is believed to be using its technology to develop a similar service integrated into the social network.
The platform is expected to serve users song recommendations from streaming sites such as SoundCloud and Rdio based on the accounts they are following.
An official announcement about Twitter’s new venture is thought to be imminent.
