Xbox 720 leaks hint at online only system

March 21, 2013

Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox 720 is rumoured to be always online, meaning players will not be able to play games from a disc, but will instead force you to install each game first.

According to technology blog VG Leaks, the console will be always-on in terms of Internet connection, and will require the next gen version of Kinect to be plugged in at all times.
The new information also claims that although the console will have a Blu-ray drive, players will not be able to play games directly from the disc.
Instead they will have to install them onto the hard drive – although users can start playing them just a few seconds after the installation process begins.
The details come from what is supposedly a leaked version of the Durango XDK, where Durango is the codename for Microsoft’s next gen console and XDK stands for Xbox Development Kit.
Rumours of requiring a permanent connection to both Kinect and the Internet have been circulating for at least a year now.
The move could be an attempt to tackle the second hand game market, forcing players to buy new games to be able to play them.
Microsoft is widely expected to fully detail its next-generation Xbox at E3 in the summer, with a release date later this year.
An Xbox 720 release date tipped to see the console touch down ahead of the pre-Christmas rush as a direct Sony PS4 rival.
