Twitter snaps up social news startup Summify

January 23, 2012

Twitter has bought social news application Summify, for an undisclosed sum.

The Summify app manages news stories from different social feeds from the likes of Twitter and Facebook to collate them in one place for the user.
Formed in Romania, Summify moved to Vancouver as a Bootup Labs project. It initially started as an email summary format before being developed for iPhone.
On its official blog, Summify says: “Our long-term vision at Summify has always been to connect people with the most relevant news for them, in the most time efficient manner.
“As hundreds of millions of people worldwide are signing up and consuming Twitter, we realised it’s the best platform to execute our vision at a truly global scale. Since Twitter shared this vision with us, joining the company made perfect sense.”
It’s unclear what capacity Summify will be used for, but it revealed the services will no longer be available to new customers and will ultimately close entirely as it moves to Twitter’s San Francisco office.
Summify continued: “We are offering a more streamlined service as we transition our efforts to working at Twitter. We are joining Twitter’s Growth team and will continue to explore ways to help people connect and engage with relevant, timely news.”
Twiter’s latest purchase comes after its takeover of mobile security startup Whisper Systems in November.
