Cloud computing still a mystery to most SMEs

January 24, 2011

SME adoption of cloud computing is on the rise, but the technology remains a mystery to most, according to the results of a new survey.

Among the key findings of a recent survey of 1300 UK Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) conducted by online business marketplace PeoplePerHour.com were:
– Nearly three quarters (74%) of SMEs don’t use cloud computing – down from the 82% recorded in a similar survey in June
– For those SMEs not using cloud computing, just under a half (43%) didn’t know what the term meant
– For those SMEs not using cloud computing, over a third (36%) didn’t see a need for it; 10% thought it too expensive; security problems worried 9%; and 2% didn’t think the technology was reliable enough.
“UK SME owners have successfully incorporated a wide variety of technologies into their business models over the past few years,” said PeoplePerHour.com founder and CEO Xenios Thrasyvoulou. “Yet this survey highlights the confusion – and a possibly even a sense of scepticism – that many small businesses have over cloud computing.
“Small businesses are yet to be convinced of the advantages of accessing the amount of computer processing power and memory available online. Although the uptake is improving, the vast majority of small businesses are still voting with their wallets.
“Perhaps Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) developers are going to have to try harder – and think smarter –in designing and promoting bespoke products for the SME market.”
