20 facts of 2010: A snapshop of life in the UK

Nearly a quarter of the UK population has no internet access, but one in ten can surf the web on their phone, according to one of the largest surveys examining life in the UK.

The British Population Survey has completed its annual audit of the UK, reveal some interesting trends, with the biggest and most up to date survey of the population, questioning 82,908 individuals.
The BPS has put together 20 random facts from the vast amount of information they gathered.
In 2010:
4.6% of the adult (16+) population was unemployed/seeking work
7.8% of the ‘Economically Active’ Population was unemployed/seeking work
54.7% of the total adult population was working
A quarter of the population has a Degree.
58% of the population were co-habiting
1 in 100 homes have 4 or more children
6% of the population are single parents
23% of the population have no internet access
56% of the population do not regularly read a daily newspaper
62% of the population do not regularly read a Sunday newspaper
12% of the population have mobile internet access
Over a quarter (28%) of homes have two cars
4% of parents have children who don’t live with them
4 out of 10 homes have satellite TV
16% of homes have cable TV
8 out of 10 homes have a PC
56% of homes have a Laptop computer
In an average month 51.6% of people shopped on line
38% of homes have a Games Console
1 in 4 homes have a DAB Digital Radio.
Methodology
All figures come from The British Population Survey the figures on this sheet are based on the 12 months to December 2010
(population representative sample of 82,908 individuals).
Data is also available for 2008 and 2009.
