The Met Office has hired user experience consultancy Webcredible for a usability testing project on its website, focusing on its new interactive weather mapping system.
The project will assess the usability of the mapping system, and Webcredible will then offer recommendations on how the user experience can be improved.
As a trading fund within the Ministry of Defence, the Met Office’s duties include weather forecasting, researching weather and climate change, and helping to keep roads open and planes flying.
Given the interactive functionality of the new weather mapping system on the website, the user experience is especially crucial.
Webcredible's usability testing will consist of eight participants, three weather experts and five members of the public, performing various tasks on the weather mapping section of the website.
Analysis and recommendations on the user experience will then be communicated to the Met Office, based on the results.
Charles Ewen, Head of Web and Business at the Met Office commented: "The British public are increasingly going online to complete day-to-day tasks and gather information, and finding out about the weather forecasts is no exception. As a result, it is very important that our site is as easy-to-use as possible for the users it serves, particularly with our new weather mapping system, which is designed to increase interaction with users. Webcredible's usability testing expertise will be key in helping us ensure that this is developed in line with users needs."
