Mobile porn arouses interest

The report, from global research and consulting company Strategy Analytics, found that there were serious hurdles facing the mobile pornography market.

Growth has been driven by greater availability of multimedia capable handsets, and more services offered by established adult companies, such as Private Media and Playboy.

The industry also seen the introduction of off-net portals, and the implementation of content certification and age verification systems.

However, Strategy Analytics concludes that mobile porn will remain a small market given the availability of a “superior user experience” on the fixed web.

Nitesh Patel, senior analyst, said: "Adult services are not a killer application in waiting. With so much free pornography available on the fixed Internet, and mobility conferring only limited advantages to adult content, we believe that demand for adult material will continue to be largely met by fixed Internet services.

Patel said he expects mobile content built around sports, music and media to perform better, because they appeal to a wider audience of users.

David Kerr, vice president, strategy analytics global wireless practice, added: "Despite these challenges, Strategy Analytics has upgraded its revenue outlook for mobile adult services from $1bn in 2008 to $5bn by 2010.

"This follows stronger-than-anticipated evidence of consumer demand and carrier implementation of strategies that lay a stronger foundation for future service growth."
