The US-based research firm predicted that four categories will lead the field in online ad spending up to 2009.

The Automotive category will leads the field of growth with a 33.8% increase forecast for 2009. Health (19.7%), Travel (18.3%) and Household goods (15.1%) will also see a significant growth in their total online ad spend before the end of the decade

While these categories will see the biggest growth, Media and Entertainment sector will continue to top the list in terms of dollars spent on online advertising. The sector will spend $2bn, Jupiter Research said.

Financial services will spend $1.7bn, Automotive will spend $1.4bn and Travel will spend $1bn, according to the report.

Gary Stein, lead analyst at Jupter Research, said that agencies and Web publishers should actively seek out relationships with clients in these key industries, who are more keen to advertise online due to their past success with the medium.

Consumer packaged goods (CPG) and health advertising were also highlighted as categories that will experience significant growth in terms of online ad spend.

While they will not contribute as high a percentage of the total ad spend, the firm said they were leaders in advertising innovation, particularly in brand advertising and loyalty-building campaigns.
