The web mail service is still officially in beta-test phase, and not open to the general public.
However, the service encourages users to allow other to sign up to the service with a limited number of invitations, and the latest move suggests Gmail is gearing up for a commercial release.
Gmail offers 1GB of free storage space, which remains significantly more than its key competitors.
Yahoo currently offers 250MB free, while Lycos increased its free email storage to 300MB. MSN also offers 250MB of email storage free via Hotmail.
